What is the Summer Solstice?
The word solstice comes from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). On this day, the sun appears to pause at its highest point before reversing its path across the sky. In the Northern Hemisphere, this occurs around June 20th–21st, when we’re gifted with the most daylight hours of the year.
But the solstice is more than an astronomical event. It is a spiritual and seasonal threshold; the turning of the wheel of the year from the vibrant energy of growth to the slower, deeper days that will eventually lead us back into rest and renewal.
A Brief History & Folklore of the Solstice
